The Biomedical Engineering Research Lab at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is seeking applicants for two PhD research assistantships. The research projects bridge the fields of mechanical engineering and bone biology. Specific research areas include finite element modeling of bone at the microstructural level as well as in vitro and in vivo loading experiments of bone cells.

PhD students will participate in UMKC’s interdisciplinary PhD program (www.umkc.edu/admissions/graduate.asp) and work closely with the UMKC Departments of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and the UMKC Department of Oral Biology. Courses will include musculoskeletal and bone biology taught by the leading experts in the field (www.cemt.umkc.edu), anatomy, as well as traditional courses in biomedical engineering. UMKC is located in the heart of Kansas City in an area rich in entertainment and cultural venues including the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Country Club Plaza, the Power and Light District, numerous museums and professional sports including soccer, football, baseball, and hockey.

A degree in mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field is required. Experience with finite element modeling and/or cell culture is desired but not required.
