2 PhD Positions in Biomedical Imaging in UK

MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine (www.utwente.nl/mira)
MIRA is a leading and fast growing Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine at the University of Twente. Within MIRA, research is grouped into 3 research tracks: Tissue Regeneration, Neural & Motor Systems and Imaging & Diagnostics. The institute combines fundamental and applied research with clinical practice. It has full professors in all these 3 realms.
MIRA works closely with hospitals, the business community and governmental organizations, aiming to secure its highly valued position in Europe. Moreover, MIRA actively encourages its scientists to bring proprietary technologies to the market. It has given birth to dozens of companies and license deals in order to make its top technology widely accessible to patients.
The challenge
The Biomedical Photonic Imaging group (www.utwente.nl/bmpi)
The Biomedical Photonic Imaging group of the University of Twente investigates the use of light for medical purposes. Our final aim is to develop optical and hybrid optical-acoustical technologies for medical diagnosis, in particular in the fields of oncology and wound healing. Our current technologies include photoacoustics, acousto-optics, and coherent optical methods. Physiological properties of primary interest to us are microcirculatory blood flow, hemoglobin concentrations, and blood oxygenation. Furthermore we focus on the quantified detection and imaging of functionalized contrast agents such as gold nanoparticles, and optically labeled targeted drugs. Our approaches include research into the physics of light-tissue interaction and its measurement, biomedical engineering to realize suitable instrumentation for in vivo use, clinical evaluation together with several medical partners. Furthermore we put strong emphasis on valorization/commercialization of our technologies.

The challenge
You will contribute to the development of combined photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging. You will work with state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging and diode laser technology. One of the candidates will also contribute to clinical feasibility studies in the areas of rheumatology and oncology.
You will work within a dynamic international research consortium funded by the European Union. Members of this consortium are leading research groups in photoacoustic imaging, manufacturers of medical ultrasound equipment, laser materials and laser systems, and clinical groups in the disciplines of rheumatology, oncology and cardiovascular disease.
Our offer
A PhD position for four years (with an evaluation after the first year)
– A stimulating scientific environment
– Gross salary ranging from € 2042 to € 2612 (4th yr) per month
– Holiday allowance (8%), end-of-year bonus (8.3%)
– Excellent facilities for professional and personal development.
– Good secondary conditions
– A green Campus with lots of sports facilities.
Your profile
The candidate should have an MSc degree in applied physics, biomedical engineering, technical medicine, or any other engineering discipline relevant in the development of noninvasive diagnostics and imaging methods using light and sound.
Outstanding knowledge of scientific English both in speaking and writing is required.
