SAARC LAUNCHES TELEMEDICINE CENTRE IN NEPAL

A South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) telemedicine centre has been launched in Nepal and will link with institutes in Lucknow and Chandigarh.

The center is part of the pledge made by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the 13th SAARC Summit in Dhaka in 2005. India has invested Rs 4.8 crore in the center at the Patan Hospital in Lalitpur.

Indian Ambassador in Nepal Rakesh Sood was present on the occasion when Nepal’s caretaker Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal declared the center open.

BIORESORBABLE STENTS USED IN APOLLO HOSPITALS IN CHENNAI

Image via WikipediThe next generation in devices that relieve blood vessel blocks will dissolve within a couple of years.

The Apollo Hospitals, one of the six centres in India to be part of a global trial on using drug-eluting bio-resorbable stents, are the first in Chennai to use the product.

The device works like a regular stent by restoring blood flow to a clogged vessel. It also contains a drug that is slowly released to help the healing process.

But what stands out is the fact that the stent dissolves harmlessly inside the blood vessel and restores flexibility of the affected vessel.

HOW TO GET FINANCE FOR YOUR PhD IN GERMANY?

What does it cost to study for a doctorate in Germany? The good news is that it costs nothing – in principle. No fees are charged for doctoral programmes at state universities and colleges – at least, for the first six semesters. Naturally you will need to meet your living costs. Currently, anyone applying for a visa to study in Germany must be able to prove they have access to a minimum of roughly 8,000 euros a year. As a rule, this sum is not sufficient to cover all the costs. On average, according to a survey by Deutsches Studentenwerk, a student in Germany spends 812 euros a month on rent, food, clothing, travelling, work materials, leisure activities, etc. Once you have enrolled at university, your expenditure list will also include the semester fees that have to be paid when you re-register every six months. The student card you then receive allows you to pay lower fares on the bus, eat cheaply at the refectory and often pay reduced admission fees.

To the right is an image of a real X-ray detector. This instrument is called the Proportional Counter Array and it is on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. It looks very different from anything you might see at a dentist’s office!

X-rays were first observed and documented in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, a German scientist who found them quite by accident when experimenting with vacuum tubes.
