Basic & Detailed Tutorial in CT & MRI for Biomedical Beginners

A extensive tutorial in CT & MRI which will cover all the aspect required by an engineer who has just entered Biomedical Imaging field and wants to explore new avenues of the field

This tutorial will help you in getting familiarized with the operation of CT & MRI

In the first, the terms “CT” (computed tomography) and “CAT” (computer axial tomography; also used: computer assisted tomography) are the usual way to refer to the method involved when x-rays are used to generate the means by which the “target” is examined. (Also in common use is a process connotation: “CATscan“.) When other forms of radiation or waves are involved, specialized terms such as “PET” or “SPECT“, two techniques in emission topography, are applied (some of these are defined by the nature of the signal carrier). Thus, there are many other specialized uses of tomographic techniques, such as in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), optical tomography, acoustical tomography, and processing of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). As an aside, we now show one example of a geophysical tomography application – specifically, seismic tomography – in which the surface of the subduction zone running south of Japan into the Kurile Islands has been reconstructed from seismic refraction data.

Important to an in-depth understanding of tomography are underlying physics and mathematical operations, which are pertinent to the methods of Signal Processing. This complex subject will not be treated here (an extensive search of the Internet failed to find a good review); intrinsic to some types of tomography are such concepts as image formation, wave transformation, interferometry, and Fast Fourier Transforms.

Three Internet Sites that cover some general aspects of CAT are at: (1), (2), and (3).

We will explain the operating principles by reviewing how a typical CATscan is conducted. As a general statement, the advantage of this and other medical tomographic methods is an improved delineation and differentiation of the various soft tissue organs in humans and other mammals. Thus, x-rays in this mode are usually able to separate these organs discretely, especially when absorbing chemicals (e.g., barium compounds) or dyes are used. We begin by showing a typical CAT Scanner in an examining room:

Activity of Brain Nerve cells influenced by Magnetic Stimulation enables more learning ability

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

What sounds like science fiction is actually possible: thanks to magnetic stimulation, the activity of certain brain nerve cells can be deliberately influenced. What happens in the brain in this context has been unclear up to now. Medical experts from Bochum under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Klaus Funke (Department of Neurophysiology) have now shown that various stimulus patterns changed the activity of distinct neuronal cell types. In addition, certain stimulus patterns led to rats learning more easily. The knowledge obtained could contribute to cerebral stimulation being used more purposefully in future to treat functional disorders of the brain. The researchers have published their studies in the Journal of Neuroscience and in the European Journal of Neuroscience.

Magnetic nanoparticles engineered to capture cancer cells

A paper published in the January issue of the journal Nanomedicine could provide the foundation for a new ovarian cancer treatment option — one that would use an outside-the-body filtration device to remove a large portion of the free-floating cancer cells that often create secondary tumors.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have formed a startup company and are working with a medical device firm to design a prototype treatment system that would use magnetic nanoparticles engineered to capture cancer cells. Added to fluids removed from a patient’s abdomen, the magnetic nanoparticles would latch onto the free-floating cancer cells, allowing both the nanoparticles and cancer cells to be removed by magnetic filters before the fluids are returned to the patient’s body.

Best Source of Medical Pictures Online

Last week , I was searching some images related to medicine on google but wasn’t able to find good images which I can use for my work . So I started searching various sources which offer a wide variety of  Medical pictures.

At that time I was able to find this website thus I am sharing it with you all people.

This is the largest database of medical pictures and definitions on the Internet. There are many sites sites that provide medical information but very few that provide medical pictures. As far as we know we are the only one that provides a medical picture database with basic information about each term pictured.

Why Anaesthesia is not used for Patients with Burn?

Burn victims must undergo a painful debridement of their wounds in order to prevent infection. Normally, they are given morphine and other non-anesthetic pain-killers. Sadly, this does not work. They still yell in pain during the operation, which is why they have to be housed seperately from other patients.

Why aren’t the burn patients given anesthesia [local or general] prior to the operation? Is there a safety issue with anesthetics?

Reasons for not using Anaesthesia

Burn victims definitely deserve adequate pain relief at all times including during dressing change
They are grossly under-dosed in clinical practice
