PhD in Biomedical in Belgium

Description
The candidate will perform research in order to prepare a PhD thesis in (bio)medical research, more specifically in cardiology with a focus on the metabolic, hemodynamic and vascular alterations which occur in patients with heart failure. Candidates will collaborate in a research project that aims at better understanding disease processes in order to develop new concepts that can be translated into clinical practice. Candidates will work closely together with the departments of cardiovascular disease of the hospitals ‘ZOL’ and ’Jessa‘ – Belgium and Cleveland Clinic – USA.

PhD in Neuroscience in Netherlands

It is still largely a mystery how collections of neurons give rise to conscious perception. By now we have some idea of the brain systems involved, but the neural mechanisms and ensemble interactions correlated to perception remain unresolved. In the current project we will investigate how neural ensembles in multiple brain areas respond to visual images, and which types of transmitter receptor in these areas are important for perceptual discrimination. Specifically, we will focus on the interaction between sensory and memory systems in this project. To this end, we will apply multi-area ensemble recordings combined with neuroopharmacology in freely behaving rodents. At a later stage of the project, results will be used to design new computational models of perceptual discrimination. The project will be conducted as part of the UvA’s research priority program Brain and Cognition, in a multidisciplinary collaboration combining psychological, neurobiological, neuroimaging and image-processing research (see www.csca.nl).

Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) program 2011

Under the Summer Undergraduate Research Grant for Excellence (SURGE) program, undergraduate students from IITK and other participating institutions undertake short duration, but focused research projects and push their intellectual abilities beyond those driven by the classroom. The duration of the programme is 10 weeks starting from May 9, 2011 to July 15, 2011. Students working at IITK receive a stipend. An award plus a commendation certificate is given to those SURGE students who produce exceptional quality research during the period.

Since 2006, 294 Grants were offered from university across the country and from participating overseas institutions as part of the SURGE program.
