TOP 10 – Biomedical Engineering Innovations in last decade

Biomedical Engineering has knocked the doors of innovation constantly in past 1 year. Here we summarise the role of some major ones there are many more innovations as well, These are the major ones which changed the whole scenario of Medicine & healthcare around the world

After seeing all of them I hope you will say

I AM PROUD TO BE A BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER

With a great leap in the field of science and technology at the beginning of the 21st century, people were able to witness the appearance of numerous inventions some of which are already helping patients worldwide, while other devices could lead to serious innovations in the near future.

Spectral Imaging: Next Big thing in Diagnostics

New dual-energy spectral imaging technology represents a new standard of visualization that helps address two main computed tomography (CT) clinical imaging challenges: material separation and artifact reduction.

GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, UK) presented the increased clinical adoption and emergence as a “must have” tool of its Gemstone spectral imaging (GSI) computed tomography (CT) application at the 2011 International Symposium on Multidetector Row CT, held in San Francisco, CA, USA, in June 2011.

GE Healthcare’s second release of GSI technology now includes refinements in image quality and usability. This second release is being provided to all current GE Discovery CT750 HD systems with GSI worldwide to help clinicians make well-informed, patient-focused decisions.

Video Lecture Notes on Bioelectromagnetism

About The Materials

The course provides a general view of bioelectromagnetism and describes it as an independent discipline. It begins with an historical account of the many innovations and innovators on whose work the field rests. This is accompanied by a discussion of both the theories and experiments which were contributed to the development of the field. The physiological origin of bioelectric and biomagnetic signal is discussed in detail. The sensitivity in a given measurement situation, the energy distribution in stimulation with the same electrodes, and the measurement of impedance are related and described by the electrode lead field. It is shown that, based on the reciprocity theorem, these are identical and further, that these procedures apply equally well for biomagnetic considerations. The difference between corresponding bioelectric and biomagnetic methods is discussed. It is also shown, that all subfields of bioelectromagnetism obey the same basic laws and they are closely tied together through the principle of reciprocity. Thus the book course helps to understand the properties of existing bioelectric and biomagnetic measurements and stimulation methods and to design new systems.

Kyrghyz-Indian Mountain Biomedical Research Centre (KIMBMRC) Innaugrated

Marking a major milestone in the cooperation between the two countries, the Kyrghyz President Ms Roza Otunbaeva and the Defence Minister Shri AK Antony today inaugurated the Kyrghyz-Indian Mountain Biomedical Research Centre (KIMBMRC) at the Kyrghyz capital, Bishkek today.

The Centre will carry out research on the mechanism of short term and long term high altitude adaptation. It will also mobilize and synchronise the expertise of the two countries in the area of high altitude research. The scientists will focus on molecular biology approaches to identify markers for screening of people for high altitude resistance and susceptibility to high altitude sickness and development of mountain maladies. The benefits of these studies will apply to a large population across the globe, as more and more people travel to the mountains every year. India’s contribution to the project is Rs 6 Crores.

About the OpenEEG project

Many people are interested in what is called neurofeedback or EEG biofeedback training, a generic mental training method which makes the trainee consciously aware of the general activity in the brain. This method shows great potential for improving many mental capabilities and exploring consciousness. Other people want to do experiments with brain-computer interfaces or just want to have a look at their brain at work.

Unfortunately, commercial EEG devices are generally too expensive to become a hobbyist tool or toy.
